Breaking Down Barriers: Light Orlando’s Lunch and Learn at The Islamic Center of Orlando

Breaking Down Barriers with The Islamic Center of Orlando

On Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, Light Orlando was honored to be hosted by the Islamic Center of Orlando (ICO) for our monthly Lunch and Learn series. Light Orlando’s Lunch and Learn gatherings bring together nonprofit and faith-based leaders from across Central Florida to connect, share insights, and explore how we can work together to address pressing social challenges.

This month’s session was a powerful reminder that when faith communities unite to listen and learn, we not only share knowledge, we also build bridges. During our visit, attendees had the opportunity to hear from Imam Tariq, learn about ICO’s mission and outreach programs, tour the mosque, and engage in open dialogue that inspired understanding and broke down misconceptions about Islam. Guests joined us from organizations such as the Christian Service Center, AdventHealth Foundation, Matthew’s Hope, Catholic Charities of Central Florida, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, among others.

Community Outreach Programs by the Islamic Center of Orlando

At its core, the Islamic Center of Orlando seeks to practice and present Islam in the United States by offering religious, educational, and social activities for both Muslims and non-Muslims.

Their mission is clear: “To foster and promote a socially responsible Muslim-American identity that contributes positively to the community.” Through an array of programs and initiatives, ICO strives to build bridges of understanding, empower individuals, and encourage positive contributions to society.

“Education brings understanding- you do not fear people when you understand them.”- Imam Tariq

That theme of understanding guided every part of our visit. During his presentation, Imam Tariq reflected on a memorable interfaith encounter. Once caught in the rain, he was offered shelter by a rabbi who shared his umbrella. That simple act of kindness became a profound symbol of shared humanity.

ICO’s outreach programs embody that same spirit of connection and care:

  • Open House Wednesdays: Every Wednesday at 6:30 PM, the doors of ICO open to all for tours, presentations, and opportunities for open dialogue. Attendees can ask questions, meet community members, and gain firsthand understanding of Islamic beliefs and practices.

  • Educational Visits: ICO regularly hosts high school and university groups, inviting students to learn about Islam through interactive tours and Q&A sessions. These experiences not only promote understanding but also prepare future leaders to approach interfaith collaboration with respect and empathy.

  • Community Care Programs: From Back-to-School drives to mobile food truck outreach and a Free Health Clinic, ICO provides tangible support to underserved communities- offering meals, medical care, and school supplies to those in need.

  • The Muslim Academy of Greater Orlando (MAGO): Operating as a nonprofit, MAGO provides high-quality academics for students from Pre-K through 8th grade, nurturing both intellect and faith in a safe and engaging environment.

Another incredible community milestone: ICO founded the Al-Ghazali Endowed Professorship at the University of Central Florida. This was funded and made possible, not by one single benefactor, but by contributions from community members united in the belief that education and dialogue can build understanding. The chair, currently held by Dr. Cyrus Ali Zargar, promotes the study of Islam and fosters ongoing interfaith dialogue at the university level.

“If your leaders are people of understanding, your followers will be the same. This is why interfaith work is so important.”- Imam Tariq

ICO’s interfaith efforts create meaningful connections among people of all faiths through shared experiences, hospitality, and dialogue.

  • Interfaith Ramadan Iftars: Each year, ICO invites community and faith leaders to join in breaking the fast during Ramadan. These shared meals celebrate compassion, faith, and unity- reminding us that while our practices may differ, our values of gratitude, love, and service remain the same. (This is where Light Orlando first partnered with ICO- a collaboration that continues to grow today!)

Faith Leader Gatherings: ICO regularly brings together clergy and representatives from diverse faith communities to discuss common challenges and explore opportunities for joint service.

  • Interfaith Barbecue: One of the most anticipated community events, this outdoor gathering uses food, hospitality, and conversation as powerful tools for connection. Neighbors of all backgrounds come together to share stories, celebrate community, and experience the welcoming spirit of ICO firsthand.

Breaking Down Barriers for a Brighter, More Inclusive Future

During our tour of the mosque, guests were invited to remove their shoes and observe Islamic prayer rituals, demonstrated by Imam Tariq. We learned that before entering for prayer, worshippers perform a cleansing- washing hands, face, arms, and feet- as a symbol of purity before God. Imam Tariq explained, “Because God is clean, we must be clean in His presence.”

Moments like this opened the door to deeper understanding. A conversation between Imam Tariq and missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints revealed a surprising shared truth- Islam and the Quran include mentions and teachings of Jesus Christ! Many attendees expressed awe at how much common ground existed between their faiths.

From that dialogue, one thing was clear: when we take the time to learn from one another, we find more similarities than differences.

As the ICO website reminds us, “Islam is rooted in the belief in one God (Allah) and emphasizes compassion, justice, and equality. It teaches us to love our neighbors, care for the environment, and uphold the dignity of every individual.” These shared values form the foundation for a more inclusive, understanding future- one where love and unity outshine division.
