Light Orlando Lunch and Learn: Partner Spotlight on US Hunger

Last Wednesday, we had the privilege of visiting US Hunger alongside our Central Florida charity leadership partners for an inside look at their mission, impact, and innovative approach to ending hunger.

From the moment we stepped into their facility, it was clear, US Hunger is about much more than providing meals.

Their work addresses the root causes of hunger by tackling the social and economic challenges that force people to seek food assistance in the first place. These are known as the Five Major Social Determinants of Health:

  • Healthcare Access

  • Economic Stability

  • Education Access

  • Built Environment

  • Social & Community Context

By using food as a platform for connection, US Hunger partners with organizations to identify needs, provide immediate assistance, and work toward long-term solutions.

A Mission with Global and Local Reach

Founded in 2010 around a kitchen table as “Feeding Children Everywhere,” US Hunger began by sending meals to Haiti after a devastating earthquake. In the years since, they’ve distributed over 191 million meals, mobilized more than 1 million volunteers, and launched programs that span the globe, including right here in Central Florida!

Their impact is felt through three key initiatives:

  1. Full Cart® – America’s Virtual Food Bank, delivering fresh and shelf-stable foods directly to households with dignity and discretion.

  2. Hunger Projects – High-energy meal-packing events that bring communities together to fight hunger.

  3. Data Analytics – A data-driven approach to uncovering and addressing the systemic causes of food insecurity.

Why This Matters

As US Hunger reminds us, 1 in 10 households in America struggle with food insecurity. Meeting that need requires more than food; it takes connection, collaboration, and innovation. Together with partners like US Hunger, we’re not just filling plates for today; we’re helping create solutions for tomorrow.

US Hunger also offers a paid, part-time travel opportunity to help lead meal-packing events nationwide. It’s flexible, looks great on a resume, and some students are even on track to visit all 50 states just by working part time!

Let’s deliver hope, together.
