SALT Outreach: Light Orlando's April Lunch & Learn Recap

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, leaders from across Central Florida gathered at Kress Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church in Winter Park to connect, learn, and grow together at Light Orlando’s April Lunch & Learn. As part of a series launched in 2025, these gatherings have already brought together more than 160 nonprofit and faith-based leaders, fostering collaboration and shared impact across the region.

April's Light Orlando Lunch & Learn: Featuring SALT

About SALT Outreach

SALT, an acronym for Service and Love Together, was established in 2011 with a mission to serve individuals experiencing homelessness, particularly those living unsheltered and outside of traditional shelter systems. Their approach centers on meeting immediate, essential needs while building pathways toward long-term stability.

Their services include access to showers, laundry, clothing, hygiene products, food, storage, charging stations, and mail services. Beyond these essentials, SALT also provides case management, mental health counseling, and spiritual care. Through strong community partnerships and a commitment to compassionate service, SALT walks alongside each individual on their journey toward stable housing and long-term well-being.

  • Mission: “To share Christ’s love by serving the unsheltered through comprehensive mobile outreach centers that serve immediate needs, catalyze permanent housing solutions, and empower self-sufficiency.”

  • Vision: “That every metropolitan area in the US has a comprehensive outreach center for people experiencing homelessness.”

  • Purpose: “SALT is a front-line organization that acts as a comprehensive front-door for people experiencing homelessness.”

During the Lunch & Learn, SALT leadership also shared that their name was inspired in part by Matthew 5:13, emphasizing the call to be “the salt of the earth", preserving goodness, purpose, and impact in the world.

Community Impact

SALT’s 2024 impact report highlights the scale and depth of their work in restoring dignity and care to those they serve:

  • 53,336 hygiene products distributed to support health and self-care

  • 18,660 loads of laundry completed, because a shower is only part of the story without clean clothes

  • 16,477 showers provided, offering a vital opportunity for dignity and renewal

These numbers reflect consistent, compassionate presence in the lives of individuals often overlooked.

Housing Programs: Moving Beyond Immediate Needs

While SALT meets urgent physical needs, their mission extends to long-term transformation through housing support and case management.

In 2024 alone:

  • 2,190 case management appointments provided personalized guidance and goal planning

  • 294 individuals and families transitioned into permanent housing

    • 164 people were housed indirectly through partnerships with other agencies

    • 130 clients were housed directly through SALT case managers

At the Lunch and Learn, it became evident that SALT is committed to walking with individuals toward lasting stability, providing support each step of the way.

Client Testimony: A Story of Restoration

One of the most impactful moments of the Lunch & Learn was hearing directly from clients whose lives have been changed through SALT’s work. We got to hear from Roslynn and Johnny who received life changing assistance from SALT.

Roslynn shared:

“It could happen to anybody. My family experienced homelessness in 2022.” She continued, “I had made some bad choices in my life that had unfortunately got me incarcerated in that time. I did do some growth. Best growth that I did was I got closer to God, bring him home with me while I was gone. My husband lost his leg three months after my incarceration, which unfortunately led my husband and our three young sons to experience homelessness.”

She described the heartbreak of knowing her husband and children were sleeping on the streets while she was unable to help.

Roslynn continued, “By the grace of God, my husband still was able to find some angels,- they took my family in. I'm so grateful for SALT. When I came home, I was reunited with my family, and the only way I would've been reunited with them was because my husband was able to get into a housing program with SALT’s help. Him and my, my two younger children, and they paid month to month rent and with my husband having a roof over his head and an address for me to come home to.”

Since her return, Roslynn has begun volunteering with SALT. Today, she and her husband Johnny have saved money and now live with their children in a four-bedroom, two-bathroom home. SALT has also helped Johnny begin the process of receiving a prosthetic leg, which has already been fitted.

Behind every statistic is a human life.

To close the event, attendees were given an inside look at SALT’s next major initiative: mobile shelter trailers, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026.

This innovative program will include:

  • Two shelter trailers with private rooms and bathrooms

  • A resource trailer equipped with washers, dryers, and an ADA-accessible bathroom

  • A food trailer

  • A sprinter van for micro-transit

Each individual served through this program will receive:

  • Three meals daily

  • A dedicated housing and employment-focused case manager

  • 90 days in a private, air-conditioned room

  • 24/7 security and comprehensive support

The project, developed in partnership with the Homeless Services Network and supported in part by Orange County, aims to serve 80 to 120 individuals annually. Additional funding is currently being raised through donations and sponsorships.

Attendees also had the opportunity to tour a “tiny home” model, offering an additional glimpse into the dignity and stability initiatives like these will provide.

Our April Lunch & Learn with SALT reminds us that addressing homelessness requires both immediate compassion and long-term commitment. Through innovative programs, strong partnerships, and unwavering dedication, SALT is not only meeting needs, but transforming lives.

As Light Orlando continues to convene leaders across sectors, these Lunch & Learn gatherings serve as a catalyst for deeper collaboration and greater impact throughout Central Florida.
