On Wednesday, February 4th, Light Orlando hosted our first Lunch and Learn of the year at the Winter Garden campus of Matthew’s Hope. As part of Light Orlando’s Lunch and Learn Series- launched in 2025 and already uniting more than 160 nonprofit and faith-based leaders across Central Florida- this gathering provided an opportunity for collaboration, connection, and a deeper understanding of how we can collectively serve our most vulnerable neighbors. This session brought together nonprofit leaders, church partners, and community organizations to learn about the depth and impact of Matthew’s Hope’s services, and how together, we can continue supporting their mission.
A Closer Look at the Winter Garden Campus during the Light Orlando Lunch and Learn
Matthew’s Hope operates two campuses: the Winter Garden campus in Orange County, where our Lunch and Learn was hosted, and a second campus in Cocoa, serving Brevard County. During our visit, we toured the entire Winter Garden facility and witnessed firsthand the thoughtful, dignified, and comprehensive approach the ministry takes in serving individuals experiencing homelessness.
We were especially moved by a visit from two former Guests of the Moving Forward Program who bravely shared their personal stories. Their testimonies reminded us of a powerful truth: homelessness can truly happen to anyone. Their journeys reflected resilience, hope, and the impact of a community willing to offer a hand up, not just a handout.
What We Saw on the Tour

The Winter Garden campus is designed to meet both immediate and long-term needs. During the tour, we visited:
Men’s and Women’s Shower Areas: Guests can shower during Ministry Service Days, restoring both dignity and health.
The Pantry and Kitchen: Where hot meals are prepared and served.
The “Grocery Store”: A unique space where Guests shop for food using a point-based system, allowing them to select items in a dignified and empowering way.
The Healthcare Clinic: Featuring three exam rooms set up to the same standard as a traditional medical office, plus a dedicated space for psychology and mental health services.
The Fulfillment Center: Where volunteers were actively sorting clothing, shoes, and essentials to meet the specific needs of Guests.
On-Site Barber Shop/Beauty Parlor: Offering haircuts that restore confidence and help Guests prepare for interviews and employment opportunities.
The Matthew’s Hope “Shop”: Run by program graduate Greg, who was building lattice fencing for use at the upcoming Arnold Palmer Invitational. Seeing a program graduate leading a project was a tangible example of the ministry’s impact in action.
Ministry Service Days & Mobile Outreach

Matthew’s Hope hosts Ministry Service Days every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Orange County campus. During these hours, Guests receive:
A hot meal
Access to showers
Laundry services (available on Tuesdays)
The ministry typically sees about 70% men and 30% women utilizing shower services on outreach days.
In addition to campus services, the Mobile Ministry Response Team goes out into the community on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Mobile Pantry distributes nonperishable food, hygiene items, and clothing, while the Healthcare Team checks vitals, distributes medications, dresses wounds, and provides prepared meals donated by community partners. This outreach ensures care reaches those who may not yet be ready or able to come to campus.
Between both campuses, Matthew’s Hope serves an average of 48 unhoused Guests per outreach day for both physical and behavioral health services.
The “Point System” & Moving Forward Program

A distinctive feature of Matthew’s Hope is its point-based system. Guests earn “effort points” by participating in services and engaging in the Moving Forward Program. For example:
Showering during Ministry Service Days earns 10 points.
Completing laundry on Tuesdays earns 5 points.
Points can then be used to “shop” for needed items within the program. This system reinforces responsibility, participation, and dignity.
Since 2010, the Moving Forward Program has evolved into a multi-faceted pathway designed to meet Guests where they are while challenging them toward independence and self-sustainability. The program offers multiple levels of engagement, ensuring that each Guest can take meaningful steps forward at their own pace.
Matthew’s Hope describes its philosophy simply and powerfully: Help Us, Help Them, Help Themselves.
A Holistic, Trauma-Informed Approach to Healthcare

One of the most impactful parts of our visit was learning about the ministry’s healthcare model. The clinic provides free, low-barrier healthcare for people experiencing homelessness, offering both acute care and chronic disease management, along with education.
Their approach is trauma-informed and harm-reduction-aligned. This gives them the ability to meet Guests where they are, without judgment.
Why does this matter?
Many individuals experiencing homelessness cycle through emergency rooms for preventable issues. By connecting Guests to consistent care at the Matthew’s Hope clinic, hospitals can reduce avoidable admissions and readmissions. The team often addresses underlying barriers such as:
Lack of transportation
Mistrust of the healthcare system
Behavioral health conditions
Limited access to refrigeration or wound care supplies
Community partnerships are critical in this model. Warm handoffs such as direct introductions from trusted partners increase follow-through. Coordinated care plans and shared resources create continuity that gives Guests their best opportunity for long-term stability.
The key takeaway from the day was clear: when community partners and street-level clinics work hand in hand, our most vulnerable neighbors have a far greater chance at health, hope, and independence.
Moving Forward Together
At Light Orlando, we believe collaboration multiplies impact. This Lunch and Learn strengthened our shared commitment to illuminating hope through action.
