This June, Light Orlando gathered for a meaningful Lunch & Learn hosted by Catholic Charities of Central Florida. This event marked the first Lunch & Learn of our Summer of Service 2026 season.

Our Lunch & Learn initiative creates space for community members, nonprofit leaders, and mission-driven organizations to come together, share resources, and deepen understanding of the vital work being done across Central Florida. Each gathering offers an opportunity to learn directly from local partners while discovering practical ways to serve our neighbors with greater compassion and purpose.
During this month’s session, attendees gained valuable insight into the mission and ministry of Catholic Charities, an organization dedicated to serving vulnerable individuals and families throughout the Diocese of Orlando.
Their mission is simple: embracing those in need with hope, transforming lives through faith, compassion, and service. This calling is rooted in Scripture, particularly the words of Jesus:
“For I was hungry and you gave me food,I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me,naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me…”- Matthew 25:35–36
Guided by Catholic Social Teaching
The work of Catholic Charities of Central Florida is grounded in the Seven Principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which provide a framework for promoting justice, dignity, and human flourishing.
These principles include:
Life and Dignity of the Human Person, recognizing that every human life is sacred and each person possesses inherent dignity.
Call to Family, Community, and Participation, which emphasizes that strong communities are built when individuals are empowered to participate and support one another.
Rights and Responsibilities, affirming that human rights must be protected and that those rights carry responsibilities toward others.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, reminding us that society is measured by how it cares for its most vulnerable members.
Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, emphasizing that work should uplift human dignity and support flourishing lives.
Solidarity, calling us to recognize our shared humanity and pursue justice and peace together.
Care for God’s Creation, which teaches that stewardship of the earth is an essential expression of faith and responsibility.
Together, these principles shape the heart of Catholic Charities’ ministry and guide their service across Central Florida.
Comprehensive Services for Central Florida Communities
One of the most impactful takeaways from this Lunch & Learn was the scope of services Catholic Charities provides to individuals and families facing hardship.
Behavioral and Mental Health Services
Catholic Charities offers comprehensive outpatient behavioral health services, including therapy, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and care coordination.
Their mental health team supports adolescents, adults, couples, families, and seniors through both virtual and in-person services across nine counties in the Diocese of Orlando. They also work to reduce stigma surrounding mental health through educational programming and community training opportunities such as Mental Health First Aid.
This work reflects a commitment to whole-person healing by supporting mind, body, and spirit.
Agape Mission Markets
Through the Agape Mission Markets, families experiencing food insecurity can access nutritious essentials such as fresh produce, meat, and pantry staples.
These food pantries help restore dignity because individuals can receive food that best meets their personal and nutritional needs, ensuring care remains both practical and compassionate.
Family Stability and Financial Assistance
Catholic Charities supports individuals and families at risk of homelessness through emergency financial assistance, case management, and housing stabilization services.
Their Family Stability Program provides homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing support across nine Central Florida counties. This program helps families maintain safe and stable housing during times of crisis.
Immigration and Refugee Services
For immigrants and refugees building new lives in the United States, Catholic Charities provides affordable legal assistance, employment support, education, and mentoring.
These services help newcomers navigate complex systems while fostering long-term stability and belonging within the community.
Healthcare Services
Catholic Charities also provides free and low-cost healthcare services, including medical, dental, case management, and preventative care for individuals and families with limited access to healthcare resources. Through dedicated professionals and volunteers, these services help bridge critical gaps in care.
Housing and Housing Counseling
Affordable housing remains one of the most pressing needs in Central Florida.
Catholic Charities addresses this challenge through affordable housing programs, property management, and housing counseling services. These programs equip individuals and families with practical tools for long-term stability.
Services include:
Budget coaching
Credit building
Mortgage counseling
Rental counseling
Foreclosure prevention
Fair housing education
These resources empower families to move toward sustainable housing solutions.
Spotlight: Pathways to New Hope
A major highlight of the Lunch & Learn was learning about Pathways to New Hope, a supportive housing program located in Sanford. Designed for Seminole County residents, Pathways to New Hope combines affordable housing with structured support services to help residents build long-term stability and independence.
The program offers dormitory-style housing with private bathrooms and kitchenettes within a community-centered environment focused on accountability, growth, and support.
Residents work closely with program staff to develop individualized life plans centered on personal goals, housing readiness, and vocational growth.
Supportive services include:
Case management
Housing counseling
Wellness education
Technology training
Workforce development
A unique feature of the program is its emphasis on vocational training. Through a partnership with Seminole State College, eligible residents can participate in culinary and hospitality certificate programs. This creates pathways toward sustainable employment.

Pathways to New Hope represents a powerful model for reducing homelessness by combining housing, education, accountability, and opportunity.
Looking Ahead
as always, our Light Orlando Lunch & Learn program serves as a reminder that lasting community transformation happens when organizations collaborate, resources are shared, and people are empowered with hope.
As we move through our Summer of Service 2026, we remain committed to shining light on the organizations working every day to serve our neighbors with compassion, dignity, and love.
With our partners, we are Delivering Hope, Together.
